France's Pape Appeals 10-week Ban - Yahoo News

View photo France's lock Pascal Pape (L) battles during the Six Nations international rugby union match between Ireland and France in Dublin, Ireland on February 14, 2015 (AFP Photo/Franck Fife) Paris (AFP) - France lock Pascal Pape has appealed the 10-week ban he received after kneeing Ireland's united states Jamie Heaslip during their Six Nations clash, the tournament's committee announced on Friday. Heaslip suffered three fractured vertebrae as a result of the foul with the committee saying last week only Pape's "expressions of remorse" had saved him from a longer ban. The 34-year-old forward's appeal for the foul in France's 18-11 loss at Lansdowne Road a fortnight ago will be heard in London next week. "The appeal is on the grounds that the 10 week suspension was excessive & disproportionate", the Six Nations disciplinary committee explained in a statement. France coach Philippe Saint-Andre, who said the morning after the game online that he hadn't seen anything intentional in what Pape had done, felt the punishment was "very very severe". "It was his last Six Nations, it is a shame it will finish like that for him and the France team," he said. The former French captain is set to retire from the international game after this year's World Cup. France face Wales on Saturday in a must-win clash to keep alive their outside hopes of claiming the championship. Sports & Recreation

Austria's Raiffeisenbank Says Will Close Branches In Russian Far East - Yahoo Finance

Banks are suffering from higher bad loan provisions and lower profits because of the crisis, deepened by Western sanctions over Moscow's role in the Ukraine conflict and lower oil prices. Raiffeisenbank said the decision to close seven branches in six of the far east's main cities was taken because of the low potential for developing its customer base in the region, which is sparsely populated and largely served by Russian banks. "In the current environment, it is important to be efficient and profitable," the bank said in a statement. "In the development of our sales network, we will focus on those cities where our offices show sufficient profitability." Foreign banks have been cutting their exposure to Russia, once considered http://michaeltjuu.jigsy.com one of the world's fastest growing banking markets, since the crisis hit last year, driving the rouble down against the dollar and fuelling capital flight. Raiffeisenbank said it was free considering the possible sale of its loan portfolio and customer segment of small and micro businesses, and was doing all it could to support its customers. On Thursday, Standard & Poor's rating agency said the Russian banking system could see its http://roccorkgi.soup.io bad loans rise to 17-23 percent this year from around 8 percent last year, and that profit for the sector was seen at close to zero. Russia has been forced to support many of its banks with capital injections and other measures after its largest lenders were all but cut off from global financial markets by European Union and U.S. sanctions. Hollywood Prepares For Its Oscars Close-up - Yahoo News

Dark comedy "Birdman" is vying with coming-of-age drama "Boyhood" for best picture at united states the Oscars, although a late surge by "American Sniper" could yet cause an upset. Julianne Moore, Patricia Arquette and Britain's Eddie Redmayne are among those widely tipped to take home acting prizes during the show, hosted by song-and-dance man Neil Patrick Harris. On the eve of the Oscars, "Birdman" got a new boost Saturday, taking best film at the Independent Spirit awards as well as best actor for Michael Keaton, while "Boyhood" took best director for Richard Linklater. But the race for the biggest prize of the night Sunday remains too close to call, with less than 24 hours to go. "Birdman," a fanciful yet dark tale of a washed-up superhero actor battling to revive his career on Broadway, has swept a string of prizes ahead of the Oscars including top prizes from the Screen Actors Guild and the Directors Guild of America. But Linklater's "Boyhood" -- which was made over the course of 12 years with the same actors aging with their characters -- scooped up the biggest awards at last month's Golden Globes, as well as Britain's BAFTAs. Some have even suggested that Clint Eastwood's "American Sniper" could sneak up on the inside as a dark horse, boosted by the film's box office success as the highest-grossing war movie of all time. 'Boyhood' - Ballots cast - When nominations were announced last month, "Birdman" shared the most nods with Wes Anderson's stylish crime caper "The Grand Budapest Hotel," at nine each, followed by World War II thriller "The Imitation Game" with eight. "Boyhood" followed with six.

Australia Post Flags First Annual Loss In 30 Years - Yahoo News

The government-owned company said its net profit fell 56 percent to Aus$98 million in the latter half of 2014 due to a slump in demand for letters. Like many postal services in developed countries, Australia Post has been struggling to cope as email replaces physical mail. Letter volumes dropped 8.2 percent in the second half of last year, the sharpest decline since they first started falling in 2008. Chief executive Ahmed Fahour said plunging profits from Australia Post's letter arm, which lost Aus$157 million over the period, were swallowing up profits from its competitive parcel business. "We have been carefully managing the real decline in our letter volumes for the past seven years," he said. "But we have now reached a tipping point where we can no longer manage that decline, while also maintaining our nationwide networks, service reliability and profitability." View gallery Australia's postal service is the nation's oldest, continuously operating organisation, cele Fahour called for reform of government regulations that apply official site to letters, including increasing the price of stamps and allowing a two-speed delivery service. He pointed to a government-commissioned report last year which predicted that Australia Post will lose Aus$12.1 billion from its letter business and Aus$6.6 billion overall in the next decade without reform. "This year we are forecasting a full-year loss for the first time. It is urgent we make changes this year to ensure we can continue to maintain a reliable, accessible postal service for all Australians," Fahour added.

The French authorities extradited Nacer Bendrer to Belgium on Monday to face charges of "complicity in a terrorist attack," a spokesman told AFP. Bendrer was picked up in December near the southern city of Marseille where Nemmouche was arrested after arriving by bus from Belgium following the attack. Bendrer, 26, denied any connection with Nemmouche at the time. Police said they found a Kalashnikov style assault rifle, two automatic pistols, a hunting rifle, and a magazine and ammunition when Bendrer was arrested. Video surveillance footage of the attack on the Jewish Museum shows a man armed with a Kalashnikov. Federal prosecutors confirmed late last month that the authorities were looking for a possible accomplice to Nemmouche. Nemmouche, 29, had returned from Syria where he had been fighting with Islamist extremists and was charged in Belgium with "murder in a terrorist context." The attack was the first of its kind in Brussels in three decades and shocked the country. On January 15, Belgian police carried out a series of raids to foil what they said was an imminent Islamist plot to kill police officers.

France Hails 'historic' Jet Sale To Egypt Despite Rights Concerns - Yahoo News

For Paris the 5.2 billion euro ($5.9 billion) sale is a rare triumph after six failed attempts to export its flagship multi-role combat jet, but analysts criticised double standards as the delivery of two Mistral-class warships to Russia remains stalled over the Ukraine crisis. He called it a "historic day" for the company, which has put tens of billions of euros and nearly three decades of development into the Rafale, the French airforce's prime combat jet.
